How to nail a job interview
Going to a job interview can be a bit daunting. You’ve applied for the job, they think your CV and past experience is what they’re looking for, and now they want to see if you’re a good fit for the role and team.
The first thing to remember is that they obviously think you could do the job – you’re half way there. The interview stage is about getting more detail about your strengths, skills and most of all your personality and how you show up.
There are a few things you can do to help you nail a job interview. Whilst these may be simple tips, you’d be surprised by the number of people who don’t get this right.
- Be 5-10 minutes early – it seems obvious, but punctuality is a must. It shows you can manage your time and are reliable.
- Dress smart – you need to make a good first impression. What you wear will help convey you’re serious about the job. Avoid jeans, singlets and anything else too casual – you mean business, so dress like you want the job.
- Do your research – find out a bit of information about the company – what they do, how long they’re been around and what their values are. This will show you’ve come prepared and have done your homework.
- Print a copy of your CV and cover letter if applicable. You might not need it, but it will give you a bit of confidence if you have something to refer to.
- Be yourself – it’s important to show who you are, your personality and what you’ll bring to the role.
If you follow these tips, you’ll be on your way to landing yourself a job. While this isn’t a full list, they will help.
